When I was little I wanted to be “a happy” when I grew up…

I’m not really serious on the whole “New Years Resolution” thing but when people were jokingly asking each other about their resolutions this year, a million things ran through my head. I’m graduating from university, getting ready to enter the “real world”. After a brief moment of panic I got pretty excited. I was lucky in that I had a great upbringing and my parents always emphasized doing your best, setting goals, and thinking positively. It started when I was really young, I actually have a home video of myself stating, “When I grow up I want to be a happy”. Now I’m not sure what that was, but I can only imagine it was pretty cool. Then a few years ago I was at the mall around Christmas and Santa called me over to his “north pole” and asked me what I wanted that year. I said, “I just want to be happy”. I said it jokingly because I really couldn’t think of anything I needed or wanted that year, but I meant it. Happiness is something I’ve always strived for and it’s lead to becoming passionate about the concept of optimism.

I’m reading a book right now entitled What Are You Optimistic About? by John Brockman. He asked this question to 150 high-powered scientific thinkers and world class minds, who responded on the pessimistic times of our society. I’ve found this book very intriguing as it puts an optimistic spin on some of the most negative aspects of our current world. I will share some of the great ideas on this blog as well as my everyday encounters with optimism.

Thinking about it now, because I’ll be entering the “real world” soon and ultimately growing up, I guess my New Years Resolution could be to become a happy….
